About Gill

Hi, I'm Gill Tomlinson

...in love with Greece

In my studio in the heart of a Greek village in the south Peloponnese I make art which is infused and inspired by my everyday environment and draws on a life-long love of Greece.

From my first visit to Athens as a teenager I was hooked… becoming obsessed with this exotic, quirky country: the heat, the light, the colour, the food. It was love at first sight and the start of a relationship spanning over forty years. In my twenties, work as a holiday company representative and wholefood cook facilitated a decade of seasonal living in various parts of Greece, including Vouliagmeni, Corfu, Crete, Zakynthos and lovely Skyros.

My art journey began in my late thirties, with a Foundation course in Art & Design, followed by a BA in Textile Design at the Chelsea College of Art. Over the next decade, I worked in the studio of a silk printing mill, then as a freelance designer for the international print market, ending up as a textile designer for Cath Kidston.

But the call to Greece was too strong! In 2007, we bought our home in the Peloponnese and I began creating a new body of work inspired by life in the village. I exhibited locally each summer from 2013. Finally, in August 2019 we signed the lease on a large shop premises in the centre of Charakopio. This is now my year-round art studio, shop, gallery and teaching space.

As well as loving to share my own art, I’m passionate about encouraging creativity in others and enjoy introducing fledgling artists to sketching, and the exciting world of mixed-media art.
