Winter Colour was created on a piece of watercolour paper which I had previously textured with acrylic paint. It had been patiently waiting around in a drawer for inspiration to strike. It was just the thing to use as a starting point for this colourful village scene, where I wanted a textured wall and an aged look to the elements.
These beautiful old doors with decorative metalwork are much in evidence in many parts of Greece, including my home village in the south Peloponnese. The scene was painted from the imagination, drawing on such remembered images and adding some creative licence. The whitewashed steps are beautifully textured and glint in the winter sunshine. The old door has seen better days but sports smart white lace curtains… and the plants are healthy and lush from the winter rains.
This mixed media painting was created with layers of acrylic paint, wax and ink on watercolour paper. The back side of this original is coated with thin layer of blue acrylic paint, which I only spotted later in the painting process! The finished painting has been given a couple of coats of clear spray UV varnish.
