Village Stopover

An original mixed-media collage painting created on a vintage postcard. An original and unique small work of art.

I love to seek out vintage postcards – especially those which have been mailed from travellers in Greece and the Mediterranean many years ago. They tell the stories of early continental tourists and their impressions of Greece and the islands of yesteryear. Some cards, which date back to the early 1960’s are so poignant I can hardly bear to re-purpose them.

The handwritten side of the postcard forms the base for my artwork, which is variously hand drawn, collaged, transfer printed and painted with acrylic and inks before being thoroughly sealed with protective clear medium. Glimpses of the original text remain readable – other parts are obscured to make way for the painting. Some cards even have clearly visible postmarks and date stamps.

Village Stopover combines one of my sketches of a traditional Greek village (in this case, lovely Koroni in the southern Peloponnese) with a postcard of the Acropolis in Athens. The senders were obviously on a bit of an epic journey as the postcard seems to have been posted in Bulgaria.

Each original Vintage Postcard Painting measures approximately 14 x 10cm ( 5.75 x 4″)

Your vintage postcard art will arrive carefully mounted in a white aperture mount.The back of the aperture has been left open so you can see the photographic side of the postcard.

The mount supplied with the painting is designed to fit a standard size 24cm x 18cm frame which is a lovely size frame in which to display the artwork.

Altered postcards make very distinctive original paintings which display well individually. They can also be hung as part of a collection of Greek/Mediterranean mail art. I often add newly completed postcards here so keep an eye out for new work to add to your collection.
