International Womens Day

This year I celebrated Womens Day in Vassilitsi, along with about fifty Greek women and a handful of ‘xeni’ women. It was a great evening. The food, in Vasilitsi’s taverna was, as usual, excellent. We ate loads of really fresh, tasty salads, with deep- fried courgettes, tzatziki, hot cheese dip, melitzanasalata, taramasalata and kalamarakia….and chips! The Greeks were all eating ‘fasting foods’ ie kalamarakia and tarama – no meat, as we’re in the week after Clean Monday when mosp people observe the fasting rules.

The dancing started almost as soon as the food had been consumed, and continued, non-stop all night. I took these photos as an afterthought, just as we were dragging ourselves away around 1.30am, and several women were still dancing! The dance class I did last winter came in pretty handy, as I was able to join in with quite a few of the dances, without getting too out of step! A great incentive to seek out another dance class and improve my repertoire.
